WILMINGTON, NC (WECT/FOX WILMINGTON Television) – WECT and FOX WILMINGTON have partnered with the American Red Cross for the #CapeFearStrong Hurricane Relief effort. Upon completion of the #CapeFearStrong Disaster Relief Telethon at 8pm, 9/27/2018, $355,086 was raised to benefit those affected by Hurricane Florence. Donors had the option to call or donate at www.wect.com/strong.
“It was our mission before and during Florence to alert our viewers and give them the information they needed to stay safe” said Mark Mendenhall, Vice President and General Manager of WECT. “It’s now time to help our community get back on their feet. We live here too.”
“We’re proud to lead this recovery effort to help those affected by Hurricane Florence” said Charlotte Cohen, General Manager of Fox Wilmington. “It is our responsibility as local broadcasters to not only report recovery efforts, but to be a part of them as well.”

WECT and Fox Wilmington made the call but it was our caring community that answered.” Said WECT and Fox Wilmington Anchor and Community Relations Manager, Frances Weller. “#CapeFearStrong is not just a hashtag. It is who we are.”
The Red Cross of Eastern North Carolina is a 501© 3 organization. 91% of all donated funds go directly to Hurricane Florence impacted areas. “Financial donations raised in the WECT #CapeFearStong Fund Drive for Hurricane Florence will help people affected by this devastating storm,” said James Jarvis, executive director of American Red Cross of the Cape Fear Area. “Donations are used to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from this disaster. This includes providing food, shelter, relief supplies, emotional support, recovery planning and other assistance as well as supporting the vehicles, warehouses, technology and people that make that help possible.
Donations included $10,000 from WECT’s parent company, Raycom Media, $20,000 from Mega Corp Logistics, $50,000 from TD Bank, $50,000 from Wells Fargo Bank, and $100,000 from Smithfield. 535 individual donors called and contributed online.
