Long Bay Garden Club Scholarship Supports Horticulture and Turfgrass Students at Brunswick Community College
BOLIVIA, NC – On March 20, 2018, Long Bay Garden Club President Faye Smith presented the Brunswick Community College Foundation with a $3,000 scholarship to be distributed to a Horticulture or Turfgrass Management student at Brunswick Community College (BCC) for the 2018-2019 academic year. The presentation was a part of the club’s Annual Charity Luncheon benefitting youth scholarships, hospice, and other local charities. Two BCC student scholarship recipients, Caleb Ferguson and Tommy Harrelson, addressed the club as they shared their experiences in the Horticulture and Turfgrass Management programs at BCC and how scholarships impact their success.
Caleb’s love for agriculture led him to pursue the hands-on Horticulture and Turfgrass program available at BCC. He attributes his time working side by side with the instructors and other students to discovering all the many avenues for employment after he completes his degree. Before taking courses at BCC, he “didn’t realize the number of opportunities and careers he could have through studying horticulture.” Tommy shares a similar story in that the small class size at BCC enabled him to develop his passion for plants into a lucrative future career. His love for horticulture began as an active member of the Future Farmers of America at South Brunswick High School. Tommy says the financial support from the Long Bay Garden Club Scholarship allows him to obtain his degree at home in his native Brunswick County through a program that is highly respected in the local industry.
For students in the Horticulture and Turfgrass Management programs, scholarships such as the Long Bay Garden Club Horticulture Scholarship are vital to create opportunities for achievement. Students graduate from those programs ready to join the bustling golf course maintenance and horticulture-related industries in Brunswick County. Recent graduates of the programs are currently employed at golf courses such as St. James Plantation, Farmstead Golf Links, and Pinehurst #2 and with landscaping companies, public and private gardens.
This is the second year the Long Bay Garden Club has partnered with the BCC Foundation to award a scholarship to Brunswick Community College students. The Long Bay Garden Club was organized in 1977 and is a member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs and The Garden Club of North Carolina. The club’s community giving is focused on supporting hospice care facilities and youth scholarships.
